Who?
DAVID TREND is a professor at the University of California, Irvine. He holds a PhD in Curriculum Theory and an MFA in Visual Studies. His books include The End of Reading (2010) , A Culture Divided (2009), Everyday Culture (2008), and The Myth of Media Violence (2007), among others. Honored as a Getty Scholar, Trend is the author of over 150 essays and a former editor of the journals Afterimage and Socialist Review. He lives in Los Angeles, CA

Contents include discussions of issues in the fields of cultural and media studies, politics, and education relating to topics concerning identity, representation, and power. My book, Everyday People, takes a critical look at why most people feel powerless and cut-off from the "bigger" forces that govern their lives. Multinational manufacturers and retail chains limit choice and diversity in what we eat, war, and consume. Educational authorities and media experts deplore the activities and entertainment that most people enjoy. Bureaucrats and government officials waste tax revenues, enact frivolous legislation, and declare unwanted wars. In the face of powerlessness and detachment from public life, large segments of the population have become alienated from the democratic process, and absorbed with self-interest and private concern.Copyright 2011.
